MSA Union

Terms of use

Last updated

These terms cover the website msa.org.za and the MSA Union app, both run by MSA Union (the Muslim Students Association Union of South Africa, a registered non-profit company). By using either, you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.

Using the app

  • If you are under 18, you may use the app only with a parent's or guardian's consent. Continuing past the sign-up step confirms that you have it.
  • Give true details when you create an account.
  • Anyone may join a chapter. A seat on a chapter's committee is applied for, and only someone currently studying at that chapter's university may apply. The committee checks this before it approves you.
  • Your account is yours. Keep your sign-in to yourself. You are responsible for what is done with it.
  • Treat people with respect. Do not use the app to harass anyone, to share anything unlawful, hateful or misleading, or to pretend to be someone else.
  • Do not misuse it. Do not try to break into accounts or parts of the app that are not yours, overload it, or copy its data in bulk.

A chapter's committee or MSA Union may remove content that breaks these terms.

Chapters own their content

Posts, events and Jumu'ah plans in the app are published by a chapter, through the members of its committee who hold the right seat. The chapter is responsible for what it publishes. A post stays the chapter's when the person who wrote it leaves the committee or deletes their account.

When a chapter publishes something, it gives MSA Union permission to show it in the app and on the website, and to share it to the social media accounts the chapter has connected (below). The chapter must have the right to publish whatever it posts, including photos and videos of other people. Before a photo or video is published, the person posting it confirms that the people in it can be shared.

If you see something that should not be there, report it in the app. The chapter's committee reviews reports first, and MSA Union reviews any they leave unanswered.

Connected social media accounts

A chapter's committee may connect the chapter's own accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, YouTube and TikTok. Only the Chair and the PR and Marketing portfolio can connect or disconnect them, and only accounts that belong to the chapter.

What we post on a chapter's behalf

  • Only what the committee chooses. The app posts to a connected account only when a member of the committee publishes a post, an event or a Jumu'ah plan and leaves that account switched on for it. It posts the caption, photos or video they chose, with a link back to the app, at the time they chose.
  • Nothing else. The app does not post on its own, follow, like, comment or send messages from a chapter's account. It reads the account only to show the chapter's own posts in the app and to tell the committee whether a post went through.
  • The platform's rules still apply. Each post must also follow the rules of the platform it goes to. A platform may refuse or remove a post, and we cannot change that.
  • Disconnecting. A chapter can disconnect an account in the app at any time, or remove the app's access in the platform's own settings. We then stop posting to it and delete what we keep to reach it. Posts already published stay on the platform until the chapter deletes them there.

No warranty

MSA Union runs the website and the app as volunteers, free of charge, as they are. We work to keep them accurate and available, but we do not promise that they will always work, be free of mistakes, or post to every social media account every time. Prayer times, the qibla direction and the Quran and hadith texts are given in good faith; check anything you rely on with a source you trust.

As far as the law allows, MSA Union is not liable for any loss that comes from using the website or the app, or from not being able to use them.

Changes and ending

We may change these terms. When we do, we change the date at the top of this page. You can stop using the app and delete your account at any time; https://msa.org.za/delete-account explains how.

These terms are governed by the law of South Africa.
